Timothy Hardy of Corpus Christi Competes in Student Speaker Bureau Tournament in Seattle

2011 Oct 4

Timothy Hardy, a sophomore from Corpus Christi, was one of six Howard Payne University students to travel to Seattle to particpate in the Northwest Parli Warmup Tournament at Bellevue College. Hardy earned third place in Junior Impromptu Speaking and sixth place in Extemporaneous Speaking.

The teams are coached by Dr. Julie Welker, professor of communication, and Kim Bryant, associate professor of communication.

"The northwest is typically known as one of the toughest regions in speech and debate competition," Welker said. "To have five of our six students competing there place in finals is simply outstanding, and having two first place winners was just the icing on the cake."

Founded in 1889, Howard Payne University is a Christ-centered academic community dedicated to excellence by developing and equipping the whole person for intellectual inquiry, personal and professional integrity, and service to God and humanity.

Located in Brownwood, Texas, HPU offers a full array of undergraduate programs and a limited number of graduate programs in a traditional residential academic community. The university also offers selected undergraduate and graduate course work by electronic means and at extended learning centers responsive to the academic needs of the communities served. HPU maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio, which contributes to the university's reputation of being "a place where everybody is somebody."
